札幌農学校の記録でたどる札幌留学の時代

John C. Cutter

詳しい経歴は不明だが、 1878年に着任後、マサチューセッツ農科大学及びハーバード大学医学部を卒業した同博士は医学のみならず、英文学を担当した。 その科目は「英語」、「作文暗唱」、「英語学暗唱」、「英学」、「綴文」、「自作演説」、「作文及演説」と多岐にわたり、札幌農学校の英語教育に貢献した。また契約外の歴史、経済、心理学等のリベラル・アーツ系の講義も務めるなどその豊かな教養を生かし活躍した。1887年任期満了により辞職したが、札幌農学校在職8年半余りと、初期外国人教師の中ではブルックスに次いで長い在職となった。

カッターによる英語試験問題

カッターが作成した英語の試験問題が「Annual report of Sapporo Agricultural College」に残っている。Shakespeare, Scottから、19世紀つまり当時の現代文学まで網羅した、英文学講義の試験問題となっており、彼の豊かな英文学の素養が窺えるものと言えよう。
